I attended Pittcon from 1984 – 2020. Each Pittcon has its own special memory but none is so strong as when I was a senior chemistry major at the University of New Hampshire and went to my first Pittcon in Atlantic City . I was overwhelmed by the size and energy of the exposition and I knew right away I wanted a career in the field of analytical instrumentation.
The Lab Gauntlet Challenge is the biggest highlight for Fritsch, going back to 2019. It was my first experience at Pittcon. The excitement from participants engaging with our team- and the challenge- creates memories for me. Turning cell phones or gummy candy into dust? Saving the world with Science Super Heroes? Bring it on! Each year I look forward to running this interaction with conference-goers, they have fun, laugh, and are amazed. What a creative approach to learning about laboratory technologies!!
In 1994 we celebrated, “From a handful of scientists to the greatest science show ever”. I will always think of Pittcon as the place for graduate students to experience their first scientific presentation and rub shoulders with Nobel Laureates in the process. It is also an annual opportunity to see friends from around the world. Over the years I have had the opportunity to meet many of the entrepreneurs who have made our scientific advances possible: Arnold Beckman, Jim Waters, Bob Finnigan, Keene Dimick, Leroy Hood, Masao Horiba and many more. Pittcon continues to serve as the opportunity for today's technological breakthroughs to be transitioned from our technical program to new instruments that are introduced on our exhibit floor.
Pittcon holds an extraordinary place in my heart. The organizers embody the mission of scientific outreach and connecting scientists. Decades ago, I was a slightly awkward and nervous student aide volunteering in the Employment Bureau. One of the volunteer organizers urged me to submit my resume for a sales position. That encouragement was pivotal; I had three job offers by the end of the conference. This simple act was the catalyst for a remarkable career trajectory for me.
I attended my first Pittcon as a graduate student in 1980 in Atlantic City and a year later I gave my first ever conference presentation at Pittcon 1981, also in Atlantic City. I will serve as the Pittcon President in three years when Pittcon 2027 is back in San Diego. Pittcon has delivered a fantastic scientific journey for me over the past 40+ years!
My students were able to benefit from my Pittcon attendance because I was able to bring into my classroom how scientific research was changing from year to year. And because the net proceeds from Pittcon are used to promote science education at all levels, I was able to obtain equipment to use in my classroom and was able to take my students to science activities provided by Pittcon funding through the two sponsoring societies that owned and operated it.
My son, who is now in his mid-forties and works in the health-related food service industry, used to help at Pittcon as an aid while he was in high school. A photographer from Todays Chemist at Work Magazine took a picture of my son on the exposition floor for the front cover of the magazine. You never know what will come your way at Pittcon.
