Join Ruth Mead, Education Director at Phinizy Center for Water Sciences, as she encourages all educators to add outdoor education to their curriculum. This will be an active session with simple activities that help take the first steps in outdoor learning. We will explore some of the obstacles and distractions in taking students outdoors as well as the benefits. It is important for students to develop a connection with the natural world at an early age for both health benefits and working to sustain the planet. Learning outdoors can be exciting and reach many of the students who have difficulties learning in a classroom setting. Reward your students by taking them outside. Learn how easy it is to cover your curriculum and make it real for students.

Ruth Mead received a B.S. in Forestry from North Carolina State University and worked in forest management for 10 years. In 2000 she joined Phinizy Swamp Nature Park as a volunteer, and quickly became instrumental in developing and implementing environmental programs. Today she is Education Director at the Phinizy Center, a member of the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream (AAS) Advisory Board, a Georgia Master Naturalist Coordinator, and serves as a curriculum facilitator for Project WET, The Wonders of Wetlands, WOW!, and Healthy Water, Healthy People.
