Modeling Energy in Chemistry

Presented by Chad Bridle
Thursday, June 9, 2022 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Establishing matter and energy conceptions early in the year helps facilitate the learning of chemistry the rest of the school year. This workshop will equip teachers with curriculum developed by AACT members as well as instructional practices to help students develop a particle-level model of energy. Students will build arguments around how energy is transferred between matter and how changes in energy impact matter. Students will use their models to explain phase changes at the macroscopic level, symbolically through bar graphs and at the particle-level. We’ll also explore how to extend our model to explain chemical changes. Participants will experience the curriculum as students, discuss strategies for facilitation and explore the lenses of Science and Engineering Practices and Cross-Cutting Concepts.

Target Audience: Middle/High School, Chemistry

Georgia Science Standards: S8P2, SPS7
NGSS DCI: MS-PS1-4, MS-ESS2-1, HS-PS1-4, 3-2, 3-4
NGSS SEP: Developing and Using Models, Using Mathematical and Computational Thinking, Analyzing and Interpreting Data, Engaging in Argument from Evidence
NGSS CCC: Energy and Matter, Stability and Change, Systems and System Models
