Harvard University Professor Joanna Aizenberg

Pittsburgh, PA – November, 2022 – Pittcon is privileged to announce Professor Joanna Aizenberg as the 2023 Wallace H. Coulter Lecturer. Dr. Aizenberg’s lecture is entitled Venturing into Analytical Chemistry Using Photonic Crystals. This presentation introduces a powerful colloidal co-assembly approach that results in large-scale, highly ordered porous photonic crystals, and the applications that follow.

Professor Aizenberg joined Harvard University, where she is the Amy Smith Bervlson Professor of Material Science and Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, after nearly a decade at Bell Labs. The Aizenberg Lab’s research is aimed at understanding some of the basic principles of biological architecture and the economy with which nature solves complex problems in the design of multifunctional, adaptive materials. These biological principles are used as guidance in developing new, bio-inspired synthetic routes and nanofabrication strategies that will lead to advance materials and devices, with broad implications in fields ranging from architecture to energy efficiency medicine.

Aizenberg has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Philosophical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, Materials Research Society and External Member of the Max Planck Society. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the MRS Medal, the Kavli Innovations in Chemistry Leader Award, the Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Nanoscience, the Ronald Breslow Award for the Achievement in Biomimetic Chemistry, and Harvard’s Lelie Prize for the most valuable contribution to science. Aizenberg has 280 publications, 90 issued patents, and is a founder of four start-up companies.

A distinct facet of Pittcon’s annul conference, the Wallace H. Coulter Lectureship Award recognizes an outstanding scientist who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to science, having made important contributions with a significant impact on scientific education, practice, and/or research within the field of laboratory science. The 2023 Wallace H. Coulter Lecture is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM on Sunday, March 19, 2023, Philadelphia, PA, USA, in the Michael Nutter Theater at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
