Join Pittcon with the 33rd Annual Waters Symposium on Monday, May 9 at 1:00 pm EST!

The James L. Waters Annual Symposium is a unique component of Pittcon's Conference programming. Mr. Waters, founder of Waters Associates, Inc. and President of Waters Business Systems, Inc. proposed in 1987 that the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) offer an annual symposium exploring the origin, development, implementation, and commercialization of scientific instrumentation of established and major significance. The objective of the symposium is to recognize researchers and the development and application of instrumentation by preserving the early, and in some cases, more mature history of these important contributions as well as the cooperation between inventors, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and marketing organizations.

Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) is an analytical technique performed with a mobile phase of carbon dioxide with or without polar modifiers and, capillary or packed columns. As such it offers some of the properties of both gas and liquid chromatography, viscosities similar to a gas, solvating properties as in a liquid. Pioneer speakers will detail SFC’s history, capillary and packed column applications, commercial applications, SFC/MS and recent advancements.

Pittcon's FREE symposia entitled, "IAEAC – Nanotechnology for Food and Environmental Monitoring."

In this symposium, the stage is first set introducing the complexity and need for the development of sustainable agriculture and food safety monitoring from a regulatory and funding agency perspective and demonstrating the grand advancements that nanotechnology can provide. This is followed by discussion of novel electrochemical and optical sensing platforms, new recognition strategies for highly specific chemical recognition, harnessing nanostructures for anti-fouling surfaces and studies on using nanomaterials to function as cell surrogate for rapid on-site pathogen detection.

Tomorrow's Short Course at 1 pm EST entitled, "SPME: Theory and Practice" presented by Janusz Pawliszyn at University of Waterloo.

In this course several microextraction technologies will be discussed, namely solid phase microextraction (SPME), thin film microextraction (TFME) and needle trap devices (NT). The main principles of these techniques, different calibration methods, coupling strategies to GC, LC, and MS, method development steps, and advantages and disadvantages of each microextraction approach will be covered. In addition, during this short course, recent advances, developments and applications of each technique in fields such as forensic, environmental, food and flavor, and clinical analysis will be described.
