Course Description

Modern laboratories utilize a variety of software solutions to capture, manage, and deliver analytical results to their internal and external customers. Most modern analytical instruments have supporting software associated with them. In addition, laboratory automation tools like Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELN), Laboratory Execution Systems (LES), or Scientific Data Management Systems (SDMS) have been available for many years, yet few laboratories have an organized plan or strategy to ensure that these tools are properly selected and/or integrated with one another. As a result, laboratories and laboratory organizations do not gain the efficiency, productivity, quality, collaboration, innovation, and cost benefits that they should.

This course will provide participants with the knowledge and tools to enable laboratory organizations to plan their laboratory informatics strategy and road-map. Additionally, the course will highlight methods and tools that can be used to help participants evaluate and choose the best laboratory informatics solutions and justify their purchase. It will also convey a high level, technical understanding of LIMS, ELN, and LES products, how and where they are utilized, as well as the current state and trends of the laboratory informatics marketplace. Pitfalls and success stories from real world case studies will be discussed. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and current challenges in a workshop format and the key aspects of successful projects will be discussed.

Target Audience

The course is targeted for laboratory managers, chemists and biologists from all industries but will also be of interest to IT personnel.

Course Outline

The topics that will be discussed:

  • High level, technical overview of LIMS, ELN, and LES
  • Review of the LIMS and ELN market
  • The benefits of Laboratory Informatics
  • Planning your laboratory informatics strategy and roadmap
  • Successfully Selecting the best informatics solution for your lab
  • Justifying your lab informatics project
  • Case Studies (Pitfalls and Successes)
