Dr. Luo leads an interdisciplinary research group at the University of Utah. The core of his research lies in the field of electrochemistry, with wide ranging applications in the fields of organic synthesis, material science, sensing applications, and catalysis. His research seeks to answer real-world problems in energy, materials, and environmental monitoring. Dr. Luo is the co-author of about 65 publications.

Professor Smith is recognized for his impacts across a spectrum of analytical methods. With Leroy Hood he conceived and developed automated DNA sequencing. He has been a leader in developing biomolecular array technology for lectins, DNA, and RNA with both assays and technical uses such as DNA computing and RNA-mediated gene assembly.
