2015 James L. Waters Symposium: Thermal Analysis Instrumentation
Pittsburgh, PA – October 15, 2014 – The Pittcon Organizing Committee is pleased to announce the details of the 2015 James L. Waters Annual Symposium, “Thermal Analysis Instrumentation.”
The symposium will include three speakers who will cover thermal analysis from its early development through commercialization and application and highlight its rich history, as well as, its future.
We are extremely pleased to welcome the following innovators to Pittcon 2015.

When asked about trends in thermal analysis, Dr. Menard replied: “Thermal analysis is a relatively mature collection of techniques: the last major innovation was fast-scanning DSC. What has changed is the need for more precise information and hyphenated techniques answer this need.” He added, “For example, TGA or STA on their own require a fair amount of assumptions to correlate weight losses with what is actually occurring. Checking the off-gas by using FTIR, MS, or GCMS allows us to be sure of what actually came off.”
This informative session will take place during Pittcon on Monday, March 9, 2015, 1:30 p.m. Details and bios of the speakers can be found at www.pittcon.org/waters-symposium
About the James L. Waters Annual Symposium
The James L. Waters Annual Symposium is a unique component of the Pittcon Technical Program. Mr. Waters, founder of Waters Associates, Inc. and president of Waters Business Systems, Inc. proposed in 1989 that the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) offer an annual symposium exploring the origin, development, implementation, and commercialization of scientific instrumentation of established and major significance. The objective of the symposium is to recognize researchers and the development and application of instrumentation by preserving the early, and in some cases, more mature history of the important contributions as well as the cooperation between inventors, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and marketing organizations.
Pittcon® is a registered trademark of The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, a Pennsylvania non-profit organization. Co-sponsored by the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, Pittcon is the premier annual conference and exposition on laboratory science.
Proceeds from Pittcon fund science education and outreach at all levels, kindergarten through adult. Pittcon donates more than a million dollars a year to provide financial and administrative support for various science outreach activities including science equipment grants, research grants, scholarships and internships for students, awards to teachers and professors, and grants to public science centers, libraries and museums.
