Must I register for the Conference in order to take a short course?
Yes. Conference registration is required for all short course attendees. The conference registration fee is not included in the short course price.
Is a discount available if I take multiple short courses?
If you sign up for 3 (three) or more short courses, your general Conference registration fee will automatically be deducted from the total.
Is there a discount for students?
Yes. You must be a full-time student and be able to prove it with a current valid student i.d. The student discount is 50% on the course fee. There is no discount on course texts.
Must I purchase the book that is recommended for my course?
No. All texts, while highly recommended by the instructors, are optional. If you wish, you may obtain the course text by another means if it is available and you can get it at a better price.
Where and when do I pick up my course materials?
You must come to the Short Course Office in McCormick Place (room number TBA) to pick up your course materials. Course materials include copies of handouts for the course in addition to any text book you may have purchased. Don't forget to bring your receipt for the course plus the separate receipt for any text book you have ordered for your course. Course materials are available the day of the course (the Short course Office opens one hour prior to the beginning of the morning classes) or after noon on the day before your course. Please allow sufficient time to pick up your course materials to avoid the rush just before classes start.
Where exactly are the Short Course rooms located?
All short courses as well as the Short Course Office will be located in McCormick Place.. Room numbers will be available at a later date.
Are refreshments and meals included in the short course fee?
To be announced at a later date.
Is shuttle bus service available for Short Course participants?
Shuttle buses will serve all official Pittcon hotels. The shuttle bus schedule is based on cost effectiveness which dictates that they operate based on the Technical Program and Exposition schedules (e.g. when there are sufficiently large numbers of people to transport in order to justify the costly expense of operating the many bus routes).
Something has come up and I find that I can not attend the short course that I already registered for. What do I do?
Please follow the instructions in our cancellation policy. You are encouraged to send a substitute in your place, but please notify us as early as possible if you intend to use this option.
What materials must I bring to the course?
Don't forget the receipts you have for course registration as well as for texts you may have purchased (a separate receipt). You should bring materials for taking notes including notebook, paper, and pens. A calculator may be useful for some courses.
Can I bring a laptop computer to my course or should I bring a computer if I am taking a computer-based course?
All courses that require the use of a computer as part of the instruction will take place in a computer lab where computers will be provided. For other courses, you may bring a laptop to take notes, but be aware that access to plug-in power sources likely will not be available and you will need to rely on your laptop's battery.
There will be no Wi-Fi Internet service available in the Short Course classrooms in the Convention Center.
Will I receive a certificate for attending the course?
Yes, your instructor will provide you with a certificate for "successfully completing" each course you take.
Will I be able to provide feedback on my Short Course experience?
Yes. Each instructor will be supplied with course evaluation forms that should be distributed to each student. Please fill out the form and return it to your instructor or to the Short Course Office. Forms may also be obtained from the office if your instructor does not give you one. Copies of the evaluations are provided to the instructors and are used by the Pittsburgh Conference in helping to decide what courses and instructors will be part of future years' programs, and to recommend changes to instructors who are retained. Feel free to stop by the Short Course Office and discuss any specific concerns you may have with the Short Course Committee Chair or Chair-elect.
